Deafness, blindness, a missing limb ----these are all
disabilities.
When it happens what do you do?
Put your pet out of its misery?
Don't you dare.
Pets with these disabilities can live a long happy
live. Yes it is a little inconvenient for the owner.
But if you really love your pet - you will adjust.
Your pet? Oh he will adjust just fine.
If you as the owner are willing to work with
your pet and provide a safe environment,
you will have the same loving , happy, healthy pet
you had before the disability.
How?
Well here are some pointers.
Blind Pets
Keep everything the way it was.
Do Not rearrange the furniture
Do not leave things in the way for them to run into.
Pets move from memory so if you don't
change anything they will be fine.
Go down to their level to give them attention
instead of picking them up.
When they go outdoors -
make sure they are in a confined area.
If you do not have it in this type of area-
stay with them. Do not leave them alone.
Strange noises may frighten them and even on a
leash they could be in danger.
Blind pets rely on sound.
Use a squeaky toy to play.
Deaf Pets
Make sure a deaf pet sees you or anyone
before touching them.
They respond to vibrations. Tapping on the
floor will get their attention.
Keep them indoors unless supervised.
They will not hear cars and other animals
and cannot always know there is danger.
A Missing Limb
A pet can learn to get around just fine on
three legs. It takes a little time and patience
but eventually they can run with the best.
If they have lost both back legs- a cart can be made.
There are animals who have become very
happy campers with a cart.
Epilepsy
Work with your vet and with some modification
you will have a loving happy companion.
It really depends on how much you love and care
about your pet and also whether your pet
is happy and healthy or if he is suffering.
If you want a loving and devoted friend
for life-then make a few adjustments in your life
for the sake of your pet who loves you dearly.
