Winnie the Poo

He's now in a wheelchair

This was Winnie in Feb last year and just 6 month later that was about to change

He was such a happy camper. Ran all over the house & yard and he was completely blind. But he was fine.

Then we got his rabies shot & he had to have his teeth done I hesitated at that but they were badly infected so I said OK. He came home and was on antibiotics & all of a sudden he started having seizures.

I lost it! Never seen a dog with seizures and at midnight I am at the vets in nightgown & housecoat! He came home & I knew then what a seizure was. NOT Pretty!

He had several after that & I did what I could for him but they got worse. And then in Sept my little Precious got sick & went to the hospital. Unfortunately I lost her and was heartbroken. I had to go pick her up to bring her home to be cremated and when I walked in the door Winnie was having a horrible seizure. It lasted about 45 minutes & I called the vet immediately and he had another one. He said bring him in right away. I was so upset over everything I put him in the car & left my purse in the street.

When I got to the vet He had me hold him while he gave him valium & then sent me home to recover my purse. There it sat just as nice as could be in the street.

Back I went to the vets and he said he was keeping Winnie & starting him on Phenobarbital. He was there for 3 days and I was a basket case. Well the meds worked but the side effects were terrible. I was back & forth at the vets with him for a month and when he tested him he felt we needed to up them a little. That's when his back legs really got bad. And the anxiety attacks got worse where I was only getting 3 hours sleep a night. I was exhausted. I called the vet & ask can we cut it back- he didn't want to but agreed to it. After two weeks he was better & I thought OK we are OK now & Bingo- another seizure!

I called the vet & he said he has to go back on & I ask can we try Potassium Bromide & he agreed so he was on both.

Well that did it for him legs. He completely lost the use of the back ones & his front ones got weak. Beings I am having trouble with my leg trying to walk it was so hard to try to hold him up in the yard & so I decided to see about a wheelchair.

Well guess what - they are NOT cheap. I searched & searched & finally I found one who said they could get a used one for me. Great- I thought so the vet & I took measurements(as Winnie could no longer stand.) Called the company and they wanted 600.00 for a USED one. My heart sank as I was still paying off the bill for Precious.

I kept searching & was ready to give up when for some strange reason I clicked on a link on a blog & I ended up on Senior Pets Products. Wheelchairs? I thought well I'll check but I know they are expensive.

An Angel was there that day as they had one for $200.00 & no shipping charges. A brand new one made to order. Not that I had 200 laying around but I knew at least I could get that together. I immediately called and they were so nice and helpful. That was on a Wed & they said it would ship Fri and be here in 3 days. I was so excited!!!

Then my heart sank again. Winnie got worse - lost the use of all legs . couldn't hold his head up. Sleep 24/7 and I could hardly get him away to eat. He never barked or anything for 2 days & I cut the KBr back to once a day. He immediately got better. I said -Oh No I have his chair coming and now he can't even use it. but thankfully he got better & started to improve til it got here.

Well it came & it is really nice. Light weight so I can put him in and carry him outside. And this is a Quad chair.

I put him in after I read the directions. He just sat there. But they said it takes time & patience to get use to it. So I thought OK we will try him out for 5 min at a time till we see. Then I got the idea to put to leashes on the front so I could pull him.

Now let me tell you it has helped me tremendous with my leg & back. I thought well maybe even if he can't use it it will help me to keep from having to hold him up with straps & keep picking him up when he falls.

That was Wednesday. Every day it gets better. I called Tracie (she is the one who builds them & she was special. Really cares and will help you to get used to it. Gave me a couple suggestions and I must have re-adjusted the straps a million times but now have them pretty good. He now can walk 3-4 feet on the patio before he stops & today for the first he walked a little in the house as his feet slide on the linoleum floors.

So slowly we are getting there and hopefully he will soon be able to walk all over.

These people are really great and so special if anyone needs a chair check them out. I put their link at the bottom.

Of course Winnie is being spoiled rottener than ever now. He gets vanilla ice cream every night. And I am constantly watching him and petting him all the time. He sleeps in my room where I can watch and hear him and I get up during the night to change his diaper.(Yes another side effect from the meds) But I love him dearly and will do what ever it takes to help him. 14 years in a mill and now he is loved so very much!

Besides the seizures he also has an enlarged heart liver & Prostrate & a collapsed disk. So he really is a little fighter and I am so glad.

He'll always be my Winnie the Poo
